Tech things I want to buy in 2024
By Nymvaline
I’ve gotten away without having a printer of my own for a while, but paying for individual pages here and there at the library is starting to get annoying. After hearing all of the shenanigans HP has been up to, as much as I love them, I’m not going to be buying one of their printers any time soon. It’s good to hear from The Verge, in a very amusing way, that Brother’s still fine.
My computers are doing fine, and, but I want to save this from Cory Doctorow for later, because I keep forgetting what company it is when it (rarely) comes up in conversation. I’m not particularly tech-savvy, but for the next time I buy a laptop, I love the idea of supporting a company that is actively trying not to keep me from fixing things, and I don’t really have any reason to buy something else instead. https://frame.work/
I’m looking for an e-reader, or whatever it is you call a thing that uses e-ink and no lighting so you can read on it without screwing up your eyes. I used to have a kindle, before we broke the little directional button on it. If I go for an off-the-shelf thing, I’m looking at Kobo, if I use it primarily for books and also hack it a little, and if it’s as easy to sideload as they say. https://www.mobileread.com has a community where they talk about fully exploring the potential of these things. Or a Boox, if the Android version is easily updateable, and I can use it for books and Anki flashcards. Or, maybe I can convince myself that I’ll actually be up for the technical challenge, and get myself a PineNote (and build up all the functionality I need, I guess…)
Also looking for a bicycle, but I’ll probably just go to my local bike shop to get help for that. Current budget is 5-800 dollars.
This blog is starting as me trying to not leave a thousand tabs open across all my browsers, or have hundreds of bookmarks that I clean up because I don’t remember why they were bookmarked in the first place. Maybe it’ll evolve, especially since I’m keeping in mind Cory Doctorow’s bit about how his blog is his memex, but that’s all this is for now.
